One of the many “behind the scenes” things that a travel agent does is to monitor any flight schedule changes that are received for their clients’ trips. Often, our clients don’t even realize that we are monitoring flights and advocating for them, ensuring that they don’t end up with an undesirable flight itinerary.
For example, we received this flight schedule change notification today, and it would’ve become permanent if we had not intervened. Note that what was once a 2 hour and 15 minute layover in Charlotte has now become a 5 and 1/2 hour layover:
Many travelers may not know that when a flight schedule change occurs which results in a significant change or delay to their itinerary, a change to an alternate flight can be requested at no charge. In this case, we found and requested a 6:30 pm flight from Charlotte to Hartford that kept the travelers much closer to the original schedule.
Why would the airline move the flight to a much later time? The answer is simple: revenue. The change puts bodies in seats that would otherwise be unsold, and many passengers don’t realize that they can request an alternate flight or they don’t notice the change until it’s too late.
In this case, we were able to preserve the original itinerary and change the return flights to get our clients back home around 8:30 PM (instead of after midnight). We also made sure that our clients have assigned seats on their new flight, and we advised them of their new flight number.
